Bone Grafting

Your jawbone is what supports your teeth and gums. Unfortunately, periodontal disease dissolves parts of your jawbone. This bone loss can eventually lead to the loss of your teeth. The first step of treatment is to remove the periodontal disease, arresting the active bone loss. Then we repair the damage that has occurred. In many cases, various bone grafting techniques can be used to re-grow some of the bone that was lost. This is especially helpful when it is necessary to create adequate bone for placement of an implant.

Procedure: The periodontist administers a local anesthetic and gently reflects the tissue in the area of infection. He or she then removes the infected bone and fills in the damaged area with bone grafting material.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma, (PRP) is blood plasma with highly concentrated platelets. Platelets are a specialized type of blood cell involved in injury healing. Platelets also contain large reservoirs of natural growth factors.  This concentrate also contains 3 proteins in the blood to act as cell adhesion molecules: fibrin, fibronectin, and vitronectin.

Clinical data has shown that the concentration of growth factors may help to optimize conditions for bone healing.   In some cases we will recommend PRP as part of the bone regeneration procedure.  PRP is especially important in bone regeneration involving implants near the floor of the maxillary sinuses.

Bone Grafting: Before

Cross-section of a jaw that has lost volume following tooth loss. There is not enough bone to safely place a dental implant
Bone Grafting: During Healing

The patient's cells migrate into the graft and remodel it into new bone. Over time host bone will completely replace the allograft material.
Bone Grafting: After

Restored jaw now has adequate room for placement of a dental implant to replace the missing tooth.
